“He will tell you what you have, what you need to work on, and how you should go about it…”

Retirement Means New Coaching Focus & Lower Rates!
I retired from commercial writing project work in early 2025, after 31 years of experience with both a vast array of clients and project scenarios, as well as countless other writers and their unique circumstances. The result is a wealth of information about the commercial freelancing field.
While much of that experience made its way into my four Well-Fed Writer titles and my popular ezine, it also allowed me to build a successful coaching offering to writers across the experience spectrum.
But, with retirement comes a change to the focus (and cost!) of my coaching service…
Less Marketing, More Craft
One key reason I chose to retire was the advent of AI. After 31 years, simply put, I just didn’t want to retool my copywriting practice in the way I knew I’d have to, to stay competitive.
As such, the ever-evolving field of AI and how it relates to writers, as well as general marketing for writers (which overlaps with AI) will not be my coaching focus moving forward.
Rather, I plan to mainly focus on the craft of writing (which I address in my popular course, Well-Fed Craft), a subject I’ve always enjoyed. And retirement calls for enjoyable activities, right?
That focus on craft will cover two arenas:
- How to write effective versions of the commercial-writing-project types most frequently requested by clients, and…
- How to write effective copy for your own copywriting web site, as well as build a compelling sample portfolio.
A True “Value-Add”…
While marketing won’t be my main coaching focus, I can’t exactly unlearn all the marketing chops I’ve accumulated since 1994.
And AI certainly doesn’t invalidate the power and relevance of the classic marketing fundamentals (i.e., Audience, Features/Benefits, Unique Selling Proposition, Curse of Knowledge, etc.).
Bottom line: you’ll get those marketing chops whether you like it or not… 😉

“Giving Back” Through Lower Rates
Speaking of blessed, I’ve had a great career and with plenty of allies along the way. Couple that with retirement—a desire to do stuff I enjoy and less need to maximize income—and that adds up to offering a break on my rates.
My most recent coaching rates were $200 an hour (with a small break for multiple hours).
Moving forward, I’ll be charging a flat $100 an hour, with 1-, 2- and 3-hour blocks.
Another Set of (Experienced) Eyes
Marketing copywriting can be a solitary field. Over my decades in the business, I was blessed to have a small group of colleagues I could use as a sounding board for projects I was working on. Most writers don’t have that. I can be that for you.
Here’s How It Works:
